Integrated Enrichment

Unleashing our Creative Energy

Woven throughout our academics at every grade level is our rich and stimulating integrated enrichment program. Literature stimulates art projects. Sculpture is used in a science study. Math is tied to music. And dancing and decorative arts become integral components of Jewish celebrations. At the Lerner School, self-expression is an essential part of our holistic approach.

Creativity through Visual Arts

Drawing from Faith Ringgold’s classic, Tar Beach, third graders create story quilts based on their own families. Fourth graders produce decorative masks to commemorate the month of Adar, and kindergarteners draw Snow Bunnies to understand geometric circles. These are just a sampling of the way the principles of line, shape, space, color and texture are seamlessly integrated into our academic program.

Music, Movement & Drama

First graders have fun playing Salami, a game that teaches the melodic syllables la, sol and mi. Third graders build on that by mastering B, A G and E on the soprano recorder. Finally, fifth grade music students compose their own rhythms, performing on chosen instruments for their classmates. It’s all part of the Orff-Schulwerk music and movement program used to teach principles of rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, and form.

Healthy Bodies for Healthy Minds

From first grade on, students build gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination and sportsmanship by playing conventional games, such as dodge-ball, soccer and basketball, and creative ones like Giants, and Wizards and Elves. Community projects such as Jump Rope for Heart start as early as kindergarten, and the importance of nutrition is addressed at every level. Participation in sports, gymnastics, rhythmic activity and dance develops not only the physical, but also the social and emotional needs of our students.

After School Program

Our dynamic After School Program includes outside play, board and group games, crafts, and many other engaging activities lead by experienced staff. Additionally, students can sign up to participate in a variety of clubs (Drama, Yearbook [limited enrollment], Cooking, Latin, Hebrew), as well as piano lessons. Students will also be offered ample study time, with the staff providing assistance (not tutoring) when necessary. The program also allows drop-ins with advance notice. Families can sign up for a many days as needed and a limited number of drop-in spots are available.
